zig zag

I started the week with every intention to do art. My brain was on this idea and that idea: what was I going to do next? But… by the end of the week, I was only thinking business. Not just business: taxes.

I had called the tax assessor in Bristol, CT who knows me by now. At least my voice on the phone. Yet again: I was late! I had called at the beginning of September because I had dutifully remembered that something was due. What I had not remembered was the REASON I had that memory: last year I had waited too long and by September first, it was late.

Because it was so close to the beginning of September, he kindly waved the penalty (over $3000!) for turning in the information needed for tax assessment. It was the income and expense form, jampacked with details: who rents? how many square footage each? how much rent base charge? CAM charge? Total charge? How much did I spend on electricity? Snow removal? Repairs? On and on. Last year I was picking up for gathering this information 1/2 way fhrough the year. I HOPE to have much better records for this next time around.

So, do I even remember art? Was I ever doing art?

Just as I was writing this, Paula let me know that she has updated my site. It now shows my wall exhibitions first. Which makes me – well, excited.

OKAY…

That first part of my post was begun last week. And then… life happened.

But to tell the truth, it feels like the same scenario. I have this idea that art will happen: that gentler, more enjoyable pursuit of mine. And then – BUSINESS! – comes crashing in and I’m not in such a relaxed state of mind. It might be optimistic news or less good, but my reaction is one of tension. It’s been a year, but it’s not my area of strength. And I can tell you now, I appreciate the job secretaries do. Are there secretaries any more? Whatever the job title is now… those that do the bookkeeping, who are organized and at ease with all this business detail.

OR whether I want to send a row of slowly transforming colors from one side of the room to the other?

Hmmm…..
